Philanthropy SA is the gateway to the world of philanthropy and grantmaking in South Africa, initiated by Inyathelo: The South African Institute for Advancement as part of its efforts to grow local philanthropic giving in support of a robust and sustainable civil society in South Africa.

Inyathelo sees a strong link between philanthropic giving and the African philosophy of 'Ubuntu' which can be defined as "I am what I am because of who we all are." This links with the etymologically of the word philanthropy which is "the love of love in the sense of caring for, nourishing, developing, or enhancing; humanity in the sense of "what it is to be human," or "human potential."
